Yo! That Slaps was an assignment turned into a passion. Flashback to mid-September 2014 on a Wednesday night. I was one of 117 students sitting in an intro to Communications class. The professor wanted students to create and curate a blog of interest for the semester. At this time, I recently started going to concerts. But since high school, I found comfort in discovering independent artists and their innovative sounds.
I have always thought about music 24/7: if I’m not listening to it, I’m reading about it and if I’m not doing either.. I’m playing it. After countless reads, I felt that artists deserved better coverage for their work. Many posts I saw consisted of two forms of coverage: simply “Hey! listen to this song because..” or a lazy copy+paste of a coincidental press release with no personal insight.
On September 5th, 2014, after three hours of pondering, browsing Twitter and a cup of Starbucks, Yo! That Slaps was founded with the following goals:
- to provide honest and resonating features about artists worldwide.
- explain how these individuals plan to leave their mark on pop culture and the music industry.
- help independent record labels get their names out.
- document my concert, music festival and other event experiences
- broaden readers’ horizons with different genres.
Music journalism began to consume me through curating this platform. I learned that my opinion has value and soon readers from around the world would stumble upon my blog.
At the end of the day, I’m just a 21-year -old with a passion for deep thinking, pop culture and writing. I hope you enjoy the music featured here.
*All posts are my opinion. My concert pictures are taken with an iPhone 6s and are unedited.
